In 2005, the Saab Draken fleet was retired and to be replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon. Before the first delivery of Typhoons, 12 F-5 Tiger II were leased from Switzerland as a stopgap measure.

The J-3038 was given this special livery in summer 2013 to mark the 75th anniversary of No. 19 Fighter Squadron. In summer 2017, the aircraft reached its maximum flying hours and was decommissioned. Since summer 2021, J-3038 has been used for training purposes at flying school 81 in Payerne, Switzerland.
